“Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story” Heartland’s Newest Truly Moving Picture “Dreamer” also second film in Heartland / NCY F.I.L.M. program
Indianapolis, IN – Heartland Film Festival® is pleased to announce DreamWorks’ “Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story” as the newest Truly Moving Picture Award winner. Kurt Russell (“Sky High,” “Miracle”), Dakota Fanning (“War of the Worlds,” “Man on Fire”) and Kris Kristofferson (“Blade I & II”) star in this drama about a father who, for the love of his daughter, sacrifices almost everything to save the life of an injured racehorse and bring the promising filly back to her former glory. The film opens nationwide October 21. "We at Heartland count it a privilege to give ‘Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story’ our newest Truly Moving Picture Award," said Jeffrey L. Sparks, president of the Heartland Film Festival. "In addition to bestowing our award on this inspiring film, we were also honored to celebrate its Midwest premiere as the Festival's Opening Night Event and host Director/Screenwriter John Gatins and the gracious young star, Dakota Fanning." Heartland created the Truly Moving Picture Award in 2000 as a way to honor theatrically-released films that inspire and enrich lives. Submissions are received directly from studios and producers for consideration. Since the industry decides a film’s success based on the opening weekend box office, Heartland encourages audiences to attend a Truly Moving Picture on its first weekend. Thirty-six films (36) have been honored with Heartland’s Truly Moving Picture Award since the award’s inception. The 2005 recipients (to date) include: “Cinderella Man,” “Coach Carter,” “Duma,” “The Game of Their Lives,” “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” “Ice Princess,” “Madison,” “Millions” and “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” Heartland and the National Collaboration for Youth (NCY) have also selected “Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story” as the second film in their collaborative program called F.I.L.M., “Finding Inspiration in Literature and Movies.” The literacy and film program encourages youth associated with NCY organizations around the country to screen the program’s featured films, read the books/scripts associated with the movies, utilize the activity guides and partake in related service projects. Heartland and NCY hope that by participating in F.I.L.M, youth will gain an appreciation for literature and film and will be inspired to realize their full capabilities. “Because of Winn-Dixie” served as the pilot film in the F.I.L.M. program. Youth associated with NCY organizations around the country were encouraged to read the book “Because of Winn-Dixie,” volunteer to read the book aloud to adults and then screen the film adaptation. The movie was showcased in 49 states and included participation of many NCY member organizations such as Girl Scouts of the USA, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Camp Fire USA, Girls Inc., Communities in Schools and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. The success of “Because of Winn-Dixie” along with increased funding from the Lilly Endowment has driven F.I.L.M. forward with the goal of expanding the program and reaching even more youth across the country.
