Join Heartland and the Indianapolis Art Center on Sunday, August 14 at 5 p.m. for a special presentation of Kurosawa's "Ikiru." Considered by some critics to be Kurosawa's greatest and most compassionate achievement, "Ikiru" captures the story of an aging bureaucrat with terminal cancer who is forced to confront his unsatisfying life and find meaning in his final days. Refreshments and a Q&A session hosted by WISH TV news director Tom Cochrun will follow the film screening. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. General admission tickets will be sold at the door and cost $7, $5 for students and seniors (60 and over). For more information, call 317-464-9405 or visit www.heartlandfilmfestival.org. Limited seating is available. Heartland created the Truly Moving Film Series to offer movie fans a chance to see and discuss moving films throughout the year. The films will be shown at the Indianapolis Art Center, located at 820 E. 67th Street in Broad Ripple, through a first-time collaboration between the two Indianapolis-based arts organizations. The 2005 film series will conclude with the 1992 Crystal Heart Award winner "Alan and Naomi" on Sunday, November 20. The film series is made possible through contributions from 92.3 WTTS, Exact Target, The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission and Wallace Construction Inc. Directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1952, "Ikiru" captures the inspiring story of Kanji Watanabe, a longtime civil servant who, upon learning that he has terminal cancer, realizes he has nothing to show for his life. Watanabe seeks comfort in family, co-workers and nightlife, but to no avail. Finally, a simple inspiration leads him to an enduring act of public generosity; an act that leaves a lasting legacy. With timeless humanity and compassion, "Ikiru" affirms life through one man's death.
