Heartland Announces Poster Contest Winner and 2007 Festival Campaign
August 24, 2007
Indianapolis, IN – Heartland Truly Moving Pictures™ is proud to announce that Andy Collen and his team at Happy Trails Animation have won the poster design contest for the 2007 Heartland Film Festival®. Their hand drawn digital image, “Apples and Oranges,” will be used to create a commemorative poster that will be distributed to sponsors, filmmakers and other special guests during the 16th annual Heartland Film Festival, October 18-26 in Indianapolis. The commemorative piece will be unveiled along with this year’s lineup of Festival films and special events on September 5.
“Heartland would like to thank the many artists who submitted work for the competition,” said Jeffery L. Sparks, president and CEO of Heartland Truly Moving Pictures. “After careful review, we felt Andy and his team’s design best portrayed what Heartland is about.”
Andy Collen along with fellow artists Amy Collen, Travis Hanour, Matt Hirengen and Andrew Reff will receive a $1,500 cash prize and will be recognized on the poster, on the Heartland Film Festival Web site, in earned media and in the film festival guidebook, which will be distributed at the Festival’s special events and screenings throughout Indianapolis. The design was selected by the Heartland staff and professionals from the marketing communications industry based on overall impact, artistic merit, creativity and appropriateness of the subject matter as it relates to Heartland’s mission.
Collen, a native of Colorado and current Oregon resident, has worked with several accomplished studios directing eye-catching commercials and independent films. His drive to create original, inspiring works is fueled by his extensive background in animation technology. Andy and Amy Collen were also 2005 Heartland Crystal Heart Award winners for their short film, “Winter/En Hiver.”
“The idea of a film festival like Heartland is to show film as an art that captures the human spirit and displays it for all to experience,” Collen says. “This year’s theme pushed our idea a step further.”
The “Dramatically Different” campaign will begin airing in late August to promote the upcoming Festival and will reach moviegoers with broadcast and print ads as well as on the internet. Heartland will also incorporate the new campaign into Festival marketing materials including point-of-sale displays and the 2007 Festival Preview Guide, which will be available at select Indianapolis area Marsh Supermarkets starting September 6.

Heartland Truly Moving Pictures, a non-profit organization, seeks to recognize and honor filmmakers whose work explores the human journey by expressing hope and emphasizing the best of the human spirit. Its flagship event, the Heartland Film Festival, launched in 1991 and runs each October in Indianapolis, screening independent films from around the world. Each year, the Festival awards $200,000 in cash prizes and presents its Crystal Heart Awards to the top-judged submissions. Heartland has awarded more than $1.6 million to support filmmakers during the last 16 years. The organization’s Truly Moving Picture Award was created to honor films released theatrically that align with Heartland’s mission.
